How to Become a Referee

Medway Youth Soccer cannot function without the help of our referees. If you are interested in becoming a referee please contact Josh Kempner, Medway Referee Assignor ([email protected]).

In-town (intramural) referees are typically U12 – U14 players. While certification is not required for intramural referees, it is strongly recommended that you complete a training course that Medway Youth Soccer participates in at the Franklin Soccer School each winter.

Travel referees are required to be certified through the Massachusetts State Referee Committee. In order to be certified, you must be at least 14 years old, or turning 14 during the current season, or must be 13 and have a personal recommendation from the local referee assignor. Travel referees primarily work in Medway, but have the opportunity to work in other towns if they are interested. You will not be scheduled outside of Medway unless you ask to be.

Certification information can be found at: www.massref.net

Take the Grade 8 course if:

You are at least 14 years old.

You want to referee travel soccer games in BAYS or other leagues.

Medway Youth Soccer will reimburse you for your first certification class. Upon completion of your class, please contact Josh Kempner for information regarding reimbursements. Annual recertification costs are the responsibility of the referee. All travel referees are required to have a current year certification. This will be verified with the Massachusetts State Referee Committee prior to the start of each season.

Referee Uniforms

All certified referees (travel or intramural) are required to wear a proper referee uniform – shirt (including current certification patch), shorts, socks, cards, watch and whistle.

Intramural referees who have not completed a certification class will be given a Referee T-shirt.

Travel referee uniforms can be purchased from Official Sports.
